Hanque O . . .
On the Red Line
Cleveland Park—
Idly rotating the wedding band
On the ring finger
Of her left hand several times around
The middle finger and thumb of her right hand
Idly rotating the band
Around and around
Woodley Park—
Lovely pale tapered fingers
Nails that appear filed
But not manicured
Then, the thumb of her left hand
Gently circumnavigating the nail of her right thumb
Counter-clockwise, around and around
Dupont Circle—
Counter-clockwise
The thumb of her left hand
Circumnavigating the nail of her right thumb
Around and around, gently
The softness of the nail
Felt by the pad of her left thumb
Farragut North—
Gently touching herself
Absentmindedly, rubbing her own nail
Rotating her own wedding band
Again and again, around and around
Touching herself, among the crush
As if she were two
Metro Center—
Disembark.
