One Last Verse! Poem by Denis Martindale

I knew that I should go to bed,
But peace I could not find,
I must stay up to write instead
This poem in my mind!
It started in the afternoon,
Stayed with me from then on,
With one last verse to end it soon
Before the day was gone!

But that last verse was not quite there,
I tried ten times and more,
So I sat down and paused in prayer,
New feelings to outpour...
Yes, I confess I prayed a while,
Perchance to get it right,
Perchance to help me set the style
And not stay up all night...

An hour past and still I yawned
And yearned for sweet release,
Thank God, for then an idea dawned,
To make my striving cease...
At last, the final line was penned,
Rewarding all my toil...
And with my poem at an end,
My cocoa's on the boil...
