One Test Only. Poem by Michael Walker

One Test Only.

Pakistan flew across the Tasman for an interlude;
their first innings, though, was no cruise.
They made only 216, relying on 92 by Javed Miandad.
Murphy Su'a, left-arm fast-medium, took five wickets that day.

It would not be easy for the New Zealand batsmen
on a green grass pitch which favoured the seamers.
Their opener, Mark Greatbatch, batted cautiously
to make 133 in 427 minutes, of 264 in the Black Caps'reply.

I saw Pakistan score only 174 in the second innings,
Inzamam-ul-Haq making 75 elegant, vital runs.
New Zealand were set 127 runs to win on the fourth day;
though sometimes a low score can be hard to get...

New Zealand made just 93, losing by 33 runs, all wickets
falling to the fast bowlers, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
