Our New Old House Poem by Loyd C Taylor Sr

Our New Old House

Rating: 5.0

The wintery gale came quickly,
Ushering coldness to these hills,
But tomorrow a cracklin' fire
Will warm away the chills.

The city chimney sweeper
Shall remove the soot and go;
So you and I can snuggle
And enjoy fresh fallen snow.

Soon in our new old house
Sounds of joy will fill the halls.
Bare feet will patter on wood floors;
Family pictures will drape walls.

For years this place stood silent
Neath the moon and stars above,
But now this new old house
Will be nurtured with our love.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Author's notes: Dedicated to Terry and Hesti. For a while now, a fellow poet and I have reviewed each other's poems. His name is Terence-George-Craddock, 'Terry'.Terry reviewed a couple of my poems, which he informed me had inspired him to write a couple of poems; Terry later dedicated two poems to me; I was honored. The two poems areas: My poem: What Have We Learned? and Easter poemTerry's poem: Christ Crucified: Heralds Earthquake Shattering Changes? by Terence George Craddock (afterglows echoes of starlight) My poem: Misty Morning Fog, about a Ghost searching for a child lost to the sea.Terry's poem: Mist Drowned Lives by Terence George Craddock (afterglows echoes of starlight) Terry has also written several poems for other Poem Hunter poets.From one of our discussions, Terry was kindly giving me a summary of some things he and his wife were doing to get settled into a home they had recently acquired. His words seem to strike a poetic nerve with me, so I wrote the above poem for him and his darling wife, HestiHere is what Terry wrote to me '... we are still waiting for a chimney sweep to turn up before lighting the fires for insurance reasons. This house was empty for 2 years so have been gradually fixing everything, but an early winter gale came through so we were caught out and my wife was cold and ill last night; but hopefully in a week all will be done except the gutters and 2 drainpipes to fix. Had the plumbing done last week so hot showers again.' From this I wrote, 'Our New Old House.' I dedicate the poem to Terry and Hesti and hope they enjoy it.Loyd C. Taylor

Still in love with the warm vibrant glow of this poem Loyd, still love the beauty of the lines, so wonderfully written and still enjoying your kind dedication :) Will add 'An Empty Neglected House Purchased Repaired' today on line, but the reply below still contains details on written into poetry, especially the lawn garden reclaiming, so in years to come, I hope to wander down memory lane and still be rereading your poem Loyd. God Bless and best wishes Terence

Really enjoyed this poem, actually called two different chimney sweeps and finally one turned up with his wife yesterday, over a week late. The only major items remaining now are the gutters and 2 drainpipes to fix, Mike put the last ceiling insulation in a few days earlier at the back entrance to the house and the rest I can pleasantly do with ease. I scrubbed a green mould off a small garden shed, the house, especially one bad side by hand with a small brush, mould remover, then mild bleach, came up really well. Once the lawns and most gardens were reclaimed it became fun. I trimmed and cut back shrubs, ferns, a few trees, put in twenty mixed daffodils and ten tulips planted in one small garden section alone. Soon will hang painting and pictures that were stored from a house in Christchurch over 15 years ago. The house has good lighting placement, I put in energy saving bulbs in the most used locations, fixed the shower door and leaking taps. The house is becoming peaceful and restful, it was sad and neglected, a lot of the wood is rimu on skirting boards and doors, one kitchen wall; which I polished with beeswax and also solid oak chairs in the lounge, a friend Nathan and his wife Sonia gave us. They drove from Wakefield near Nelson just to drop off those chairs and kitchen table and chairs, stayed awhile then drove back home. These items of furniture had belonged to Nathan's grandmother who at 83 had recently passed. She and the family had wanted us to have them, furniture had not been in the budget, and amazingly the items really looked good in the house. Friendship and true friends can add finishing touches and help fill a home. Most of our house is filled with gifts given, both old still useful and new. We had already shampooed carpets before moving in, then sorted the kitchen first, and room by room arranged that which was needed. This house suits my personality, stone walls low on the fence boundaries, small established gardens with fern and a variety of small seasonal shrubs. And now a poem to hang on the house. Thanks Loyd. Smiling here.
