Parakeet In A Coal Mine Poem by Chester Whitfield

Parakeet In A Coal Mine

Fluttering forth from the mouth of the cave
the bird of smoke twists and turns towards the light
diffusing
knowing only what it's told by others
riding on wings of approval
Spiraling upwards
it breaks free of it's chains
boundaries become punchlines
of jokes soon to be told
and the bird smiles
as he flies and melts into roof of the car
forever independent and free
