Parenthood (The Joys) Poem by Weldon Davis

Parenthood (The Joys)

Ah the joys of parenthood
Seeing your child look up in amazement
The first time they hear you whistle
Like where did that come from?
-Or-
Pulling a quarter from behind their ear
Like
Poof 'It's magic'

Baking a cake
Letting them lick the batter off the spoon
Wait.
That's enjoyable for us parents too..

Explaining why the sky is blue
About how certain gases reflect off
The sun's rays
Instead of keeping it simple
And saying cause Jesus likes the color blue..
-Or-
Why grass is green
Take'n three hours to explain photosynthesis
And chlorophyll to a 4 year old
(Silly daddy)

Seeing a smile that will melt your heart
Make'n funny faces
To see the beforehand mentioned smile

Going shoe shopping
-No-
You can not have the ones
With the wheels on them
-Or- Lights
Shoes are for comfort first fashion second

Ok.
That's a little shallow..
Affordability should be second
I feel my parents were cheap enough
When I was a child to last
Until my great great grandchildren

Seeing them pout about
Not letting them stay up past 9pm
And for god sake no video games
Before homework

Helping them with their first school project
Telling them to have compassion for bullies
All they are
Are kids who are not shown enough love at home

Their first cell phone
Putting your number in their contact list
Because you know they won't

Helping them get over their first crush
Crushing their first crush! !
Ha.

Telling them that love is value
And you value them more than anything in the world
That you would have been an atheist
If not for seeing them born

That there must be a god
All that talk of forgiveness
You understand now
Cause they could never do wrong in your eyes

Their first day with a license
The first ride they take you along for
Before they say so long, and eventually claim
You don't understand them

Letting them go
When you know you can't never
These are the joys of parenthood
