Parui Police Brutality Poem by Bireswar Halder

Parui Police Brutality

What makes a human heart lose sheen to be a beast?
It's compassion, light and love for the other.
In how many ways can we say that we're not civilized?
What shames us, what makes us dark creatures of God?

Why do our sisters and daughters meet beasts every day?
Why do they refuse to walk the creepy roads near home?
When the police lacerated her, crowned wounds with stinging nettles,
Where did the human face hide from light of God?

We are off towards the primitive age of blood
Our redeemers are our enemies, the brutes clad in khaki
Shorn of morality, ideology...they let go atrocities
They strut as the slaves of political goons.

It's shameful as we are mute spectators today
Human activists are silent, their voices choked
We flounder with our backbones crumbling,
And are onlookers of atrocities against women

Dear security personnel, stand up and have courage
Take cudgels against illegal activities, be a saviour to innocents
Or the commoners who bleed from your ferocity,
The weak seeking justice are fuming to break someday.
