Patience Poem by Nicola Thoner

Patience

Give me space to breathe
Room to move
And a voice to talk
So I can stop sinking deeper into rapture
Or further my journey into pain
Let me create through boundaries and silent codes
That people follow to stay still.

Listen to me.
Listen.
That's all I want.

My curiosity endless
And focussed now on you.
Wondering things like
What you think in the deepest parts of your mind
And
Whether you prefer action or thrillers.
With my hands I pry aside your skin
To lay bare flesh on your soul.
But

Observing from a distance
Is all I ever seem to do.
Something so deficient in me
I've stopped trying to be part of the conversation
And step outside it to see who follows.
'Love' you see
Has made me cautious.
'Love'
Has made me tired.

And I could stop the blush behind my ears when you get too close
And I'm near enough to press against you.
After so long without the slightest hint of affection shown to me.
The feel of heat is welcome.

I start noticing things like
the way your hands move
And
A gaze that lasted a little too long
And I feel
Buzzes and rushes and smiles pulsate to the surface
Before being pushed down with the caution love has given me.
Because you're not mine
And it tears me apart
When the breath on my lips
Presses nearer than you
