Pele Poem by Salvatore Ala

Pele

Who am I? I am Pele. I am the Black Pele,
The African and Caucasian Pele,
The Asian and Semitic Pele,
Pele of north and south, east and west;
Pele of gypsies and lost tribes,
Pele of the poor, and Pele of all slaves.
I am ancient Pele, one and only Pele,
Atlantean and Aegean Pele,
Pele of Machu Picchu; Pele of the free,
And of all peoples thought to be.
But at the last I am purely Pele,
Having shed my black shadow
For the gold torso of a pharaoh’s tomb.
