Place For Vision Poem by Gabriel Eshun

Place For Vision

Dedicated to Abe.

I
When Nkrumah on Afadjato saw Kilimanjaro,
The Pyramids, Cape of Good Hope…
The furnace of critics hunted for his vision
Now with the advent of-non-indifference-
Of AU and the resurfacing taste for United States of Africa…
Oh schools of Herodias—
Have their cerebellums to purge in the
Ankobra
Of postcolonialism—that ripples:
It is proper to self-govern with challenges
Than honour tables of tranquillity
But munch in servitude

II
When Mandela
Tackled why pigeons menus were halal
But menus of doves were harem,
Ubuntu vision
Came against an apartheid vision
Oh the soul of ubuntu
They engineered to scorch but the quality of his vision
Could not be limited to Celsius now Mandela
Is
A global Legacy re-educating
Those who madly give up their visions
In the valleys of the shadow of death

III
When the furnace of critics
Wrestled
To wane the vision
In the bosom of Asantewa
With regalia vivacious with talisman
She supplied swift steps of Adowa
For the Golden Stool of a stoolroom, a
Stool
Not to be handled by unauthorised personnel
Now hearts and minds from
The tetraeyes of Compass, behold
The kente vivacity
Of her Mother Figure

IV
When Edison sought to grow bulbs
To yield an electric testimony,
Once again the furnace of critics
Sought to singe his vision, his vision
Which now illumine something like
With one percent hotchilly
Of inspiration sprinkled
In ninety nine percent keenness, the total
Reality
Comes tasteful than Cos Ninety

V
Oh little Bro,
Do be Care full with these
Furnaces of critics,
Cause these furnaces of critics
Can be overly romanticized
Now this is a fresh
Coconut juice:
Let your spirit of vision
Be at the vanguard of sustaining your unique Self,
That unique Self
Which like an ignited candlehead,
Must glow unfalteringly
Whether
A room is stark empty or whopping full

Wipe your mouth!
