Placebo Poem by Harlan Simantel

Placebo

is God a placebo
of the mind?
is God a drug
to help me feel fine?

are millions like me
believing in unreality?
deceived are we?
fooled by what we think we 'see'?

our connection to Spirit
is it all just bullshit?

after prayer
feeling at ease
is it just
a mental disease?

answers to prayer
specific and real
just coincidence
no power to heal?

i understand doubt
skepticism too
often religion
seems a mad, crazy zoo

but i feel better
when I talk bluntly with God
i sense he's real
to you it may seem odd

invisibility doesn't mean
he's not there
science accepts an unseen world
it could infer
God may really be here
