Please Start To Keep Sugar And Fat Apart Poem by Stephen Katona

Please Start To Keep Sugar And Fat Apart

Rating: 4.0

When you eat sugar mixed with fat,
It might seem just a bit of this and that,
But we remember something as a baby,
Made by our favourite lady,
For milk from our mother,
Is food like no other.
A mixture so rare,
Nothing in nature can compare.
It reminds us of a mother's love,
When problems seemed far above,
And we needed to grow large,
In a world where big people are in charge.
It's written into more than one gene,
So you'll never be able to wean,
Yourself from sugar mixed with fat,
But don't despair or cry, 'Oh drat! '

Just try to start,
To keep them apart.

Your favourite ice-cream,
Will not taste like a dream,
In fact you'll probably feel sick,
And realize it was all a trick,
To earn a lot of gold,
From all the rubbish sold,
By a food industry who make addicts of us all,
Long before we can even crawl.
There's plenty of time to learn,
You already know it's a concern,
So stop gaining weight,
Before it's too late.
Cut your risk of heart disease,
I ask you on bent knees,
I'll even say please.

Just try to start,
To keep them apart.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is based on the Baby Food Hypothesis which offers an explanation for the addictive qualities of high fat, high sugar food such as ice-cream and milk chocolate. There is an advantage to being addicted to sugar and fat in the form of milk as a baby, but once weaned only modern man is exposed to food containing both sugar and fat. Avoiding consuming fat and sugar at the same time, allows us to control our appetite more easily. Even calorie free drinks containing a sweetener may stimulate appetite when consumed with a meal containing fat, as the perception of sweetness and fat in our brain may be enough to stimulate appetite.

The Baby Food Hypothesis: An explanation why high fat high sugar (HFHS) mixtures are so addictive, providing novel treatment strategies to control appetite in obesity and anorexia
