Poetic License Poem by Robert Eckstein

Poetic License

When poet hunters come around
To see me, not one can be found.
I've no poetic license
I'd like to keep just one or two;
It shouldn't be so hard to do.
They shouldn't be too hard to feed,
And of course, I wouldn't let them breed
Without poetic license.
I went to the Bureau to apply;
The Agent said, 'Its a nice try.
'You get no poetic license.
'You live in a nice neighborhood
'And poets are often up to no good.
'So no poetic license'.
Maybe once or twice I've snuk one in
And kept him fed on beans and gin.
I'd say, 'He just followed me home.
'I'll tie him up so he won't roam'.
They'd say, 'A tied-up poet's of no use.
'You've simply got to let him loose.
'You've no poetic license'.
