Poetry And Women Poem by Dejan Stojanovic

Poetry And Women

Rating: 5.0

No need to pray for rain anymore,
Petition the sky for more flowers and love,
Go to the Oracle of Delphi
Or seek to name new Gods

But we still feel what we felt in the dawn of the world.
We still look at the same sky,
Smile at the same stars,
We still listen to the same sea.

The essence of a woman never changed.
Her role transposed in different times.
But the woman stayed what she always was—
Man's Glory, destination and a dream.

As long as woman breathes existence,
We will sing and send prayers to Gods and Goddesses;
As long as she shines from our dreams,
We will listen to the winds bringing news on their lips.

We attracted already even more rain than needed,
Making our Gods and taking them down.
We sent our prayers to old and new Gods,
We were born pagans, then baptized;

We saw the change—
The countries disappear and new countries born.
We saw all metamorphoses, but in her.
The Song will not die.

You are a vestal virgin and a courtesan,
A famous star and a wild animal,
A reminder of bliss and a puzzle;
You cannot be tamed, only attained.

You are Delilah and Judith,
Proud and dangerous black widow,
You are the industrious Elissa
Waving from the shores of Carthage.

It must be that another
Caught the vigor of Dido,
Heard her voice and saw her silhouette in the blue
Beam, over the sea, in the Mediterranean light.

(Godot is always waiting. He is probably waiting for a woman.)
