Potential Poem by Annajoy Thompson

Potential

I have the strength to move mountains
If I'd only just try
I have a light that shines within me
Like the stars in the sky

I have a voice to change the nations
If I'd just take the needed breath
I have the tools to mend destruction
If I'd just take that first step

I have a joy that's everlasting
I could cheer so many hearts
I have a fire deeply burning
But I'm hiding in the dark

I have hands to feed the hungry
Yet they lie here by my side
I have the means to save a life
And yet I've never even tried

I have minutes, I have hours
I have so much time to give
But as the clicks continues ticking
I am wasting all of it

I have ambitions for the future
But my future's now my past
I want to change the world
But I'm too scared to take a chance

I have hopes for something better
But I'm dreaming now in vain
I have eyes to see the problems
Yet the evil still remains

I'm too proud to risk a failure
Though without it I'll never grow
There's so much I still hold on to
I can't seem to let it go

I'm always shy and timid
So unsure of myself
But I could change lives
There's so many I could help

There's nothing in place stopping me
No bars, no ropes, no chains
Just my own insecurity
But that's about to change
