Promise And Faith

When you say something,
Without any doubt I believe it.
When you promise something,
To see it fulfilled, I wait.
When I see your promise not kept,
Still I wait,
Hoping it would be met,
Someday.

Every new day as it comes,
I look for your promised response.
Not finding it,
I do not despair, but choose to
Wait for another day,
And not allow my faith to sway.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

Easy promises are easily broken,
Words we cannot keep shouldn't be spoken.

I like the serene simplicity of this poem and the rhythms of the repetitions. This conveys the sense of time, simply waiting and hoping. Your poem suggests you have patience and trust - which are not easy qualities to cultivate! I hope your faith will be rewarded with the promise kept. (Report) Reply

poet Helen Hunt Jackson

The month of carnival of all the year,
When Nature lets the wild earth go its way,
And spend whole seasons on a single day.
The spring-time holds her white and purple dear;
