Promises Poem by Anya Garcia

Promises

Rating: 5.0

What is a promise?
What makes it so special from the start
as the words come out of his mouth and
they find the way to your heart.
Why do we cling on to those words as if they
were air?
Why do we cling on to those words, even when
the promise is not there?

What is a promise?
How do we measure the feeling behind it?
The feeling that made his mind erupt and want
to say it.
We trust in those words despite the risk, it can
only be true if whispered
from a lover's lips.

What is a promise?
Is it his embrace, his touch
or maybe the softness of his eyes as
you watch his smiling face.
The eyes tell the story but your heart feels
the beat.

What is a promise when it's broken?
Is it the sting of his words when they
are no longer concrete,
or is it the pain you feel when his embrace
is no longer sweet.
Yet we cling on to those words as if they were air....
We cling on knowing that the words are not there...

What is a promise?
If I could amount the promises said to me,
I would be the richest....in misery.
For promises are meant to be broken; women
were made to believe them and given the right man
only a woman's heart could forgive them.

A good poem, attributed to women. A promise is a word to be meant only when broken or fulfilled.
