Question Number 7

  Sitting doing a maths exam
In the old school hall.
The answer to question number 7
I hadn’t a clue at all.

One to six were difficult
I really only guessed.
But for number seven I’m not sure
What answer will be best.

Maybe I should leave it
And go on to question eight.
Maybe the answer will come to me
If I only wait.

But the trouble is if I leave it
It will be all I can think about.
I will dream of it every night
Until I can work it out.

If Jimmy has 8 oranges
And he gives three to Annette
John gives him one more orange
And he loses two in a bet.

He than shares his remaining amount equally
Between him and a friend.
To work out how many is he left with
I am being driven round the bend.

If he ate the oranges as soon as he shared them
The answer is he wouldn’t have any.
Also did he pay the bet or not? Without this knowledge
I can’t calculate how many.

They say school is supposed to prepare you
For your life ahead.
And it’s good for what you learn in Maths
To stay in your head.

But I can’t see a reason
What purpose this would serve me.
Does it matter how many oranges Jimmy has
To anyone but Jimmy?
