Questions My Son Asks Me Poem by DAVID TERRY

Questions My Son Asks Me

“How will I know if she’s the one? ”
Asks my son
In a moment when we are alone
Driving along
With a song on the radio
“How will I know if she is the one for me? ” he asks
“Will I see or will she? ”
“How could it be? ”
Asks my son as we continue on

There are so many things to say
But instead I pray
For the wisdom to not lead him awry
By and by
As the soundtrack of the moment plays
I think, “did I really know? ”
“Did I ever let it show? ”
“How deep did the feeling grow? ”
I contemplate as we turn

And so I finally respond to him
Advising well I hope to him
“There is no manual or guide
for what you feel inside.”
“When the music plays, you dance.”
“In the moments you are apart
If every feeling is a new start
And her thoughts fill your heart
Then you know it is love.”
