Raptor * Poem by jerry hughes

Raptor *

Magnificent creature much maligned,
a travesty of your former self.
Wired to a fence proud head askew.
your bright eyes lidded in acrimony.

Your bold cry as you soared free stifled,
when a bullet smashed into your breast
spiralling you to death.

'Look there's a Wedgie'
Weekenders say driving by.
Take a good look unseeing eyes.
Look at what's left of nobility.

I remember the pair of wedgies that shared our property in Bellbird Lane. We used to watch them circling - so much higher than all the other birds. They never failed to lift the spirits. Fortunately the wedgie has become a protected species in Australia in the 21st century, so that we no longer have to witness the appalling atrocity you describe here with such passion. Wonderful poem. love, Allie xxxxx
