Redeemed! Poem by Alfred Gibbs Campbell

Redeemed!

The deep suspense is o'er;
The bloodless battle's past;
Freedom from shore to shore,
Decreed at last!

The People's voice at length
Echoes the voice of God;
Shattered and reft of strength
The tyrant's rod!

Columbia redeemed
From slavery's bitter sway;
The name she once blasphemed,
Her hope and stay!

Purged by baptismal fires,
A purer life is hers;
With holier desires
Her new heart stirs!

Diviner the career
Which now before her opes;
God-chosen pioneer
Of human hopes!

Her stars shall henceforth shine
Beacons of Love and Light,
With radiance divine
Dispelling night!

God's blessing evermore
Shall keep her true and free,
Till all the wide world o'er
Reigns Liberty!

November, 1864.
