Reflections Poem by Priyamvada Gaur

Reflections

Walking down the street,
Scared of so many reflections,
I am shallow by pain
And yes scared to see beyond what is apparent
Will I glimpse a breaking of a promise?
Or a mirror portraying a dying resolve?
Or the happiness of yester years gone by?
Or the wretched will to sustain despite all?
Yes too scared to see beyond what is apparent
It’s a comfort to run towards pain and misery
Towards sorrow that’s easy to understand and empathise,
For life and its deceits often hurt
Through vivid descriptions of vivacity, youth, power, love, promises
Expectations and hopes.
Walking down the street,
I am afraid of the reflections,
Of sympathy at my condition in the eyes of the strangers
But oh how I enjoy the contempt of the crowd,
For its easy to understand the distances
They can be measured…
It’s a nightmare to understand closeness
For how do you measure that whose existence is questionable?
Look how brilliant the world has turned out,
Scared and afraid of a friendly handshake,
Cynical of love and affection,
Suspicious of family,
Scornful of disparity from the ordinary.
Walking down the street,
Its scary to see those reflections
Which portray an undying resolve,
For I can see its future and tempted to ask,
What child, haven’t you witnessed the world enough
That you harbour dreams of resolve?
Its scary to see those reflections
Which will to go beyond unchartered territories,
For I can see its past and am tempted to ask,
What child, haven’t you learnt from mistakes and hurts past
That you harbour the hope of a world out there which is different?
Worse I am scared of the reflection which smiles and says
No one bothers
No one cares
No one will cry
But everyone will laugh
At your thoughts,
Your ambitions,
Your failures,
And your weaknesses,
But lets create a reflection of our own
Of resolve, will, hope and love
Down the street which has no end…
But only a will to walk on…
A one way reflection which only says
Forward beyond your past
A progress beyond your hurts
With no promises of a destination,
Just a one way resolve to walk on…
