Ring Poem by Percy Dovetonsils

Ring

Ring

Words are like
merry-go-rounds.
They never stand still
yet bring us back
over and over
the same ground.

They take us
up and down.
Oh yes,
we mount the most
exotic beasts
when we ride
words.

And all the time
we trip on them
(going nowhere,
yet arriving
somewhere different
from our point
of departure)

the most insane
music
keeps piping
in
the background.

The music
of the spheres.
Music
to go
in circles
to.

Music
to take
your mind
off
your troubles

while you sail
madly,
yet sedately,
through
the carnival
atmosphere:

Reaching, always
reaching
for the ring,
the ring of words,
the ring of words
ringing right.

(January,1983)
