Rupert Poem by Francis Duggan

Rupert

When his boss Gen was overseas of Rupert I took care
And I found him such good company for dogs like him are rare
We went for walks together which he seemed to enjoy
For three months my four legged mate how fast the weeks did fly.

He loved drives in the motor car for him no drive too far
And he always seemed happy in the back seat of the car
He loved our walks to Baxter's lake where he chased kanagaroo
And dug for rabbits and other things that canines like to do.

Though he searched through brakes and rank bracken where foxes and rabbits hid
I never see him make a kill and don't think he ever did
But Rupert does not hunt to kill dogs like him not that way
The foxes and rabbits that he chase live for another day.

A beautiful black and white border collie and none so bright as he
But most dogs have their failings or so 'twould seem to me
And most of the very clever dogs have got a vice or two
And Rupert not an exception not one of the flawless few.

Yes Rupert not an exception the Postman his pet hate
And as the Postman's bike buzzed by he barked through the closed gate
But he could not leave the enclosed yard the fence for him too high
He barked and madly raced around as the postie drove by.

Rupert is back with Genevieve his best mate overall
But the happy few months I spent with him for years I will recall
Off Baxter's walk through the low scrub he chased the kangaroo
And he dug for rabbits and he searched through brakes as most dogs like to do.
