Sea Rover Poem by richard stanleybaker

Sea Rover

sea rover I am
tall at the mast
scouring the measureless horizon
ocean my mother
air my soul

heart expands
to the limits of sky
brave my eyes
have we not together ploughed
these ocean fields
tilled so widely the deep
ocean sound
walrus are we
beluga too
herring full-laden
rowing the floes

oars akimber
stars awaken us
we igloo it out
hearts stomachs aflood
landlubbers - spit on them
mud-blent boots
of earth-diggers, we curse

weeks on end aloft
we albatross it
over lands unfound
nest we barely
save on the boundless shifting ice
whose melts and foundering
we make our soft respite

sea-rovers all
we, our dogs
afloat - akin to no one
away we are
lifetimes away
unsought, unfound

oars akimber
anchors none

away
we are
away

forever
away
