Searching For Truth Poem by Lone Dog

Searching For Truth

Searching for truth, I read 'The Book'
But I found the content odd,
And, thus, I now believe 'The Book'
Was not inspired by God.

What God would first make day and night (Genesis 1: 5)
And follow with eve and morn, (Genesis 1: 8)
Then, later, make the sun from which (Genesis 1: 16)
We know the day is born?

What God would enable a donkey to speak; (Numbers 22: 28)
Call a whale a fish by mistake;
Condone the cruel stoning of an innocent bull (Exodus 21: 28)
And converse with Eve as a snake?

The murderer Cain was 'protected' by God, (Genesis 4: 15)
As was David who murdered Uriah.
And God condoned the beating of slaves; (Exodus 21: 20)
A God so unlike the Messiah.

What God would rain terror on non-Jewish towns,
Instructing that no one survives, (Deut 2: 34; 20: 16)
After engraving on stone, 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'?
He left not one child alive!

What God would be so biased that
He only conversed with Jews?
Yet, His Son reached out to everyone.
No hand would He refuse.

And, what God would inspire the book Song of Songs,
With these words of lustful note?
'Your breasts are like two fawns which are twins
Your hair's like a flock of goats.'

Thus, after reading The Book, I must confess
I'm now an atheist.
I believe The Book was written by man
And that God does not exist.

But, although I no longer believe in God,
When our men were sent off to war*,
I felt a strange urge to say a prayer
For those who'd return no more.
