Second Best Poem by Jack Williams

Second Best

Something I’d like to get off my chest
A fundamental truth
No-one deserves to be second best
Not her, not me, not you

I spread myself all over you
I spread myself too thin
It's time to scrape me off your shoe
Now you won’t take me in

Get your shadow off my shoulder
Let me lay our wreath
Our love is like a great blue boulder
Dark and cold beneath

I met a girl with a jackpot smile
And stories in her eyes
But I can’t touch her laughter while
Your finger’s in my pie.
