Secondhand Love. Poem by Fay Slimm

Secondhand Love.

Rating: 5.0

No-one wants second-rate love
Somewhere in the middle of
Genuine feeling and hate.
No, but secondhand love is
A different state.
It's had first-time around
To get grounded in giving,
And if been allowed, to have
Founded a bastion
Of caring worth sharing
When another heart now
Makes the right sound.

It can be beautiful. Often
Offers a tender dessert
Of hard learned charm, so
Give me the wiser, experienced arm
Of a lover who bravely turns, and
Takes on loving again.

In the fight for creating
Delight in this life
We need never depise anything
Under the guise of
Secondhand love.
Exerting more willingly now it implies,
Let's undertake that.
As long as we know
Such devotion worth showing
Is ever the sort of true love
Needed, no matter
How many rounds we all go.

This is a charming and fascinating poem, Fay, and one on a subject you don't often hear expressed in poetry. Many folks these days have gone from one relationship to another, sometimes having many liasions in the same year, others, only have one or two over several years. I guess one could say acquiring a second-hand lover is a lot like buying a used car. No matter what it's appearance tells you, there's bound to be some dents and flaws beneath the shiny surface! Yet, as your fine poem clearly points out, sometimes love is indeed better the second time around! Wonderful and witty poem, Fay! Carl.
