Separating
I remember one day
driving in Oregon,
the places we stopped
so she could be sick
from the chemo—
touring the campuses,
having dinner,
feeling more like friends
than mother and son.
We were not good
at asking the right questions.
We failed to get past the mundane.
What was there to say?
There was so little time.
