Shattered Talisman Poem by Maurice Rowlands

Shattered Talisman

Buried deep within me
Down through the spiralling depths of my soul
A light
Not of day
But of night
Burns bright
Like a hunters moon
Or a flickering flame on a hillside
To be seen
Only at night

Buried deep within me
Down through the darkest reaches of my heart
A seer
Not of fear
But of cheer
Like a talisman
Or a meaningful charm on a bracelet
To be seen
Only when near

Buried deep within me
Down through the ethereal mists of my spirit
A tower
Not bricks and stone
But of power
Like an obelisk
Made simply of ice and of fire
To be seen
At a nocturnal hour

If the talisman breaks
Or the obelisk shakes
The light will not shatter
So the rest shall not matter
And a search will begin
For what’s buried within
