She Rests Her Head Poem by Dean McInerney

I see her rarely,
Once or twice a month,
But feel as though
I see her once or twice a year.
The time between is meaningless,
A cloud surrounds my head,
Suffocating me ‘til I see her again.
She rests her head upon my shoulder,
Oh how I want, I need to hold her.

Her hair is perfect
Though forever changing,
Her eyes are jewels under glass,
Her teeth as white as could be,
A personality to die for,
As she is so nice to me.
She rests her head upon my shoulder,
Oh how I want, I need to hold her.

She confides in me with blind trust,
Have her I must,
But I can’t, I Must gaze on,
Watch her in the arms of another,
Time and time again,
As I am not worthy of such a treasure.
She rests her head upon my shoulder,
Oh how I want, I need to hold her.

I seek comfort in the arms of another,
But it does no good,
Rather makes me crave her more.
I must lose her before she consumes.
But wait too late,
As I am obsessed,
Consumed,
Engrossed in her and her games.
I am lost in her..
She rests her head upon my shoulder,
Oh how I want, I need to hold her.

And now I know I’ll never be free,
For I love her but she doesn’t love me,
But why the hints?
The words?
The names?
Is confusion part of her twisted games?
She doesn’t need me in her life,
I only cause her trouble and strife.
But I get the feeling that’s what she wants,
She’s never felt pain, never not once.
She rests her head upon my shoulder,
Oh how I want, I need to hold her.

Maybe one day in the distant future,
I’ll be able to laugh,
And kiss,
And hold her.
But for now I’m happy
To let her rest on my shoulder,
And think of the day when I get to hold her.
