Should Have Poem by Lindsay King

Should Have

there's something to be said
about what cannot be said
i've always spoken
when i should have kept silent
but even this-
i cannot just come out and say

betrayal runs deep
and disappointment...
you could never empathize
looking out the window
with that strong look on
if i wasn't the weak one
that was cause for worry
if i wasn't forgiving
there was no reason
to say you were sorry

so the time has passed,
and curiosity is killing the cause
i wouldn't say
that i was smarter than you
but through that keen smile
and shrewd elitism
i saw the broken child
that always wanted to be
first
and last

too much time has fled me
i want to hold onto
what we had
but it would never be the same
these words you cannot say
are the ones i cannot think
i am floored
sitting on the internet
has brought us so many possibilities
-or maybe just two
and maybe, i'm just bored

maybe i'm just full of it
trying to think it true
what we had,
was far too close to perfect
it had to end
and that was sad
i think it stood for much more
than it ever should have
