Slum-Lines Poem by Xelam Kan™

Slum-Lines

Rating: 4.8

Perfectly fused ideas and conceits
Of minds fabulous in lines sweet. But
Feet, meters and syllables
Often treat very strangely.
Blank verse cedes the heroic couplet
As Gray`s elegies are voiced as Shakespeare'sonnet.
Ah! All these 'Greek'to my humble wit
As an Abstract art explains with Romantic kit.
Tho` adorn with some vivid colors and images
Still hard to catch the poet's mind and messages.

Often treated we wrongly in our narration,
A pathetic fallacy and personification
that leads to widespread condemnation.
enjambment kills poetic rhymes.
Whatever the case might be
Poesy is not a cup of tea.
And truly I too don't know why
Things queerly happen `neath the sky,
All these varieties of science and arts
Cause poignant anxiety to minds and hearts.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Basically 'Slum-lines' is an effort towards better understanding of the art of poetry.......
it's not a disgusting, odious nor any sort of humiliation,
As nobody is perfect, we all here to learn from our mistakes......

P.s. confused about the word slum-lines.....

thanks for the poem and the poet's note. i had to look up POESY to see what it means. so you see i am not a scholarly poet. the poem, read once by me so far, is a bit puzzling. those big words! yikes! ! and some of the small ones also perhaps. and, as i imagine john carter may have already pointed out to you, the fact (i don't know it is a fact, but i am assuming it is) that english is not your first language causes some difficulties for those of us who do have english as our first language (and in my case my only language....except a tiny, tiny bit of spanish i learned 50 years ago) . let me read the poem again. just a moment please. ok, i'm back. i checked definition of poignant as well; i had some idea what it meant though, as happens with many words, there was more than one definition. so now i am getting a much better feel for what the poem means. and if i understand it well enough, i agree with you. the following line especially struck me: Still hard to catch poet's mind and messages / i find that true more often than i would like to (find it) . and this line also: Leads to poet`s condemnation, i don't think it is your english which is weak so much as it is my english that is weak! thanks for sharing. bri p.s. well, i would think you should not have the word.....a.... in the second line.

Dear Blessed Bard, True to the core, poesy at her basic nature is like a school boy unwilling to school; as the bard upon Avon versed in 'As You Like it'. She likes, blesses, loves to remain intact in a few selected souls, and Thou art one of the very rare blest. Keep exploring, experimenting and promoting her at your best for ever more, as you are one destined to do so. God bless.

Poetry is, really, not everyone's cup of tea, and being a student of poetry, i must say that there are two things to be noted,1stly, that poetry is a revealed and intuitive art, and 2ndly, if one works hard to know and practice all tools like rhyming, rhythm, prosody, scansion, and figures...but then there's a difference between a poet, and a practitioner of poems, that's why all the teachers of poetry are not poets...your poem is deep, and i must agree with all here esp.Kevin Patrick.regards.
