Small Child Poem by Ruth L. Rivers

Small Child

Small child who once lay quiet between my bosoms
Silent then, in sleeps calming state
Peaceful lids entwine with stilled feet
You and mine hearts together did beat
Cheek on chest and same on head did lay
Mind so young, mother unknowing in what is to come

How now small being who climbs each struggle anew
Wide wondering at each of life’s moments
A day filled all with new ponderings
Exploring the grounds on unbalanced tottering
Not yet indifferent to life’s humble tokens
Youth yet holds giving no knowledge in world’s truth

Inexperienced kisses, unknowing hands, seeking eyes
So little yet larger than ever before
Peace inhabiting small limbs only to give pause
Active mind procuring all to make none lost
Growth does seek thee fast and implore
In this increase of age am I ever more closely to you tied
