Smell The Lilacs Poem by Shan Bruland

Smell The Lilacs

“Don’t take it too seriously,
Its only puppy love”
My mother’s words often came to mind.

Today is one of my bad days
Why was I so sure my words could explain, we don’t even make eye contact.
But, like they say, there is always tomorrow.

Something was different.
Our shy eyes met.
We smiled.

When it comes down to it, we all just want to be loved.
We were officially a couple.
When she died two years ago, I lost some of my reality.

Not a soul seemed surprised as they uttered “finally”

When I look at this picture I can almost smell the lilacs. I can smell them with my soul.

She would remind me that
“we will find our right to be.
Until then, lilacs bloom every spring.”

So this is the only picture I could bring.
I can’t miss an opportunity to bring her back a little bit,
to celebrate her imprint on life.
