Snowflakes Poem by Lizzie Lum

Snowflakes

The flurry of each passing moment
Magically holds an opaque world of endlessness
Brimming with possibilities that fill the heavens
Twisting and twirling playfully, teasing
While falling mutely like ghostly confetti

Life’s chances descend, as fresh as the whitest snow
Each flake interlaced and devoted to its own intricate pattern
Elegantly in place for that one extraordinary moment
Waiting to be captured in the palms of our hands
Every touch conferring reality onto the chosen one
Bringing that instant into the world for all of eternity
Saving and preserving it by crystallising it into life’s reality
Thus damning all of the others to wither and fade
Their moment has passed, vanished, is unrealised
Having arisen just that once in spectacular singularity

But the elected one now carries the total responsibility for the next
And alters what is and what is to be with its sole legacy
Captured and rescued forever - never can be lost or forgotten
Imprinted into the stories of our lives, its own tribute to history
So each day, each hour and each moment brings new snowflakes
For us to choose as we look upwards with wide eyes and eager hearts
Sometimes dazzled by the burden and brilliance of our latent destinies
