Song Of Sunset On The River Poem by Bai Juyi

Song Of Sunset On The River

Rating: 2.9

A length setting sun spread water in
Half river emerald half river red
Love ninth month first three night
Dew like pearl moon like bow
A strip of water's spread in the setting sun,
Half the river's emerald, half is red.
I love the third night of the ninth month,
The dew is like pearl; the moon like a bow.

Again I feel the translation has not done justice to the poet. Translation must be a difficult business- if we try to translate his language word for word into English, we simply don't have words with the same nuances. Yet to take liberties to try to pass on the emotional content risks the public's ire. That said- I prefer the second type of translation.
