Sparring Poem by Roxane Spar

Sparring

Respect, but don’t fight for your partner
Be grateful, but don’t fight for your instructor
It’s your fight, make it yours
Even if, of all the techniques, you’re still unsure
Don’t think of being scared
Put on your gear and get in there

Breathe, breathe, breathe
Stay relax, muscles at ease
You want to save your energy
Until you get an opportunity

Know and feel your opponent
To do so, control the distance
And use lateral movements
To redirect their advance

Keep your eyes on their chest
Once you’ve chosen your target
Do your combination with the intent
After you’ve done what you meant
Pull back immediately
Get back in position, and again be ready

Breathe, breathe, breathe
And make sure your face to sheathe
By keeping your hands up
And your chin down, not up
Elbows close to your ribs
Stay on the ball of your feet

Whether you hit
Or throw a kick
Always use your whole body
It will triple your energy

Be on your guard
Some people can hit hard
To absorb tighten your obliques
And use defense techniques
A good way is to counter attack
Before getting the full impact

If in one way you’re trapped
Don’t try to fight back
Think of using another weapon
There are a few you can choose from
The closest is often the best
You may even roll over and escape

Breathe, breathe, breathe
Now your opponent may seethe
So keep communication open
For you’re both into this for fun
