Sparrowfall Poem by William F Dougherty

Sparrowfall

Under a blue nave
a fledgling sparrow
with genuflecting dips
flitted down an orchard
aisle of apple trees.

No malice blazed
in the plunging hawk's eyes-
a lethal jolt of talons
slashed instantly away
the trusting sparrow's joy:

in a shock of disbelief
his stunned eyes
sagged into sleep.
