Sphere Of Influence Poem by Raj Dronamraju

Sphere Of Influence

America farts out moral condemnation of Soviet block pildedriver
Ukraine mass starvation and East Germany transgender athletes
Fly on jets powered by American hypocrisy
And only in the neighborhoods not patrolled by the red, white, and blue

But genocide in Guatemala
Conducted in the classrooms of the USA
Killed the Mayan Indians, stole their land
Mined the ports of Nicaragua
And viewed the raping of nuns as a capitalist entertainment

This is America's sphere of influence
And it is no less bloody and ignoble
Manifest Destiny and the Iron Curtain - there is no difference
One extinguishes freedom openly

The other one does it too but hides the action behind the twisting of words like democracy

The dirty war of Argentina
And the soiled hands of America
No more Soviets to spin relations against
Only the ghosts of dead Chileans and others
Marking your border as the place injustice emanates from

'But genocide in Guatemala Conducted in the classrooms of the USA Killed the Mayan Indians, stole their land Mined the ports of Nicaragua And viewed the raping of nuns as a capitalist entertainment' a poem that needed writing, been happening since before the first 13 colonies in America, read hundreds of years of it in 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee', one of the saddest books I have ever read.
