Strawberry Jam Poem by Joe Hughes

Strawberry Jam

Rating: 5.0

She takes her break at half eleven.
She never eats roast beef nor ham.
She wouldn't touch pate nor bacon.
For her it's always strawberry jam.

Now as a child she tried them all.
Marmite, peanut butter, yes even spam.
But all she ever wants in life
Is juicy, delicious, strawberry jam.

Her marriage was a fine affair.
Her closest friend was her best man
But when they came to cut the cake
The filling oozed strawberry jam.

Well marmalade she likes a little.
It is the favourite of her nan.
But she could easily forget her dinner
Then fill herself with strawberry jam.

She's been around this world of ours.
She's even been to Vietnam
But she is happiest at home
With luscious, reddest strawberry jam!

Oh, yes, indeed! Some women have a strawberry jam approach to life and bless them for it! ! They are happy women, sweet and fixed in their ways. They don't demand expensive furs, just bring 'em home a jar of strawberry jam. Easy keepers everyone of them! I got quite a tickle out of this fun-loving poem!

Joe, pretty clever and competently done, but wouldn't you like to extend your reach? Challenge yourself with a serious subject. Bouncy, rhyming couplets are good for verse lite, but why not read and be inspired by some really good contemporary formal poets like Richard Howard? If you'd like, check out my new website: jeffersoncarterverse.com Let me know how you like it. Yrs, JC

Jefferson Carter critiquing one of my fun poems? Is that really you? She sat in the swimmimg pool cafe, always eating the same sandwiches - probably not strawberry jam - but for me with her routine sort of life then they had to be strawberry jam! Jefferson, please see some of my more serious efforts on the site but, you know, even a poet as great as you has written the occasional 'lite' offering I feel sure? I'll certainly look up Richard Howard, yourself of course, - I'm off there right now and then it's back to Spike Milligan and a touch of Ogden Nash. Let me know your thoughts on some of my serious stuff. Regards and thanks, Joe
