Succotash Poem by Ted Sheridan

Succotash

Rating: 5.0

Succotash
whenever I eat it
I'm up all night.......
looking out
the bathroom window
of my second story
room with a view
where for all the dark hours
of my solitary confinement
I become reacquainted
with my weird neighbors
and their cats and dogs
screeching and barking
at possums
and things that go bump
in the night
things that peek back at me
with green eyes
and fish on their breath
My neighbors are
very strange people
I wonder what they eat
that makes them stay
up all night
flicking on the kitchen light
going outside
smoking something
that glows
with a bright red ember
playing that music
with words
I can't understand
and a beat
that drives nails
like a hammer
through my brain
Damn neighbors....
Damn succotash....

I want to move
but my legs fell asleep___
