Suicide Survival Poem by Katherine H. Belle

Suicide Survival

You hear it time and time again
Survivors of suicide attempts say
The first thing they feel after they try
Is immediate and overwhelming regret
Life is a gift
They say
Cherish each and every day
And take no breath for granted
And know that there are people
Who care enough to worry
Every day
That wonder if when the phone is ringing
If you're still alive
So why then do I not feel that way?
Why is the only regret I have
Is regret that I did not succeed?
Why is it that in
what I thought
were my last moments
With my last thoughts
And my last breaths
Overwhelming relief and peace
Knowing that I would not be in pain any longer
Knowing that I wouldn't have to continue to fight
Please, just let me go
Let me die
I said, over and over again
And why is it, that even now
I wonder if anyone cares enough
To wonder how I am
If they care enough to ask if I'm OK
Or if I'll try again
It's still a struggle
To wake up each day
And pretend that I have some hope
That tomorrow will be better
And that I'll finally be able
To look at my face in the mirror
And say to myself
'You are a good person
Capable of good things
And you will do good
For you are loved
And you love too'

'You hear it time and time again Survivors of suicide attempts say The first thing they feel after they try Is immediate and overwhelming regret Life is a gift' beautiful lines but sadly not true, some women attempt suicide ten times before succeeding, life is a gift, a true gift of love is enriching healing lives so the need for desperate acts like suicide are not needed, care givers are under paid and not appreciated enough, but good care givers are a gift from heaven, a breath of hope

I care how you are doing, I hope you have a blessed day, for God demonstrated his Love, He gave his Son that we might Live. I have learned that any day above ground is a good day. For he that is joined to the living have HOPE.

Suicide Victims Saved Will Not Always Feel Regret? I could write the line time after time perpetuating a myth suicide seekers upon failing suddenly embrace life sadly nine out of ten men succeed? men are serious suicide seekers? encouragingly nine out of ten women fail experts shrinks define this as pleas for help does this mean suicidal men do not seek help? does it mean suicidal men cannot ask for help? does it mean suicidal men have less avenues for help? some survivors of suicide attempts regret surviving others attempts at dying the first thing they feel after attempts might will be pain if waking without aid? could be confusion drug overdose induced? perhaps survivors will wake to shame? perhaps to immediate overwhelming regret? life is a gift but people gifted with good lives do feature rarely on state fatality suicide lists beautiful lines do not lean to desperation suicides some women attempting suicide ten times before succeeding is not a symptom of regret therefore their damaged lives were irrepairable? did society neglect to throw enough money at solutions? why is love nurturing not writing into human souls? life is a gift a true gift of love is enriching healing repairing lives so need for desperate acts like suicide are not needed; saving care givers are under paid not appreciated valued supported? good care givers are breath of hope gift from heaven? I am saddened to hear of your recent troubles Lyn Paul, which throughout at least some stages of our lives many of us may share. I also am appreciate to Katherine H. Belle for writing this poem, suicide is a subject I have spent a great deal of time reading research about. One of my first major poems back in January 1982 was a poem titled 'State Of 20th Century Man', which was based upon a suicide which occurred on one tree hill in Auckland New Zealand. Now Katherine H. Belle has compelled me to write another suicide poem, for many the same reasons, to perhaps inspire readers to spot the signs, be motivated into preventative action, not to take loved ones for granted, furthermore in the hope that some individuals will go on to enforce changes in society helping to solve the disaster of suicides in society. Back in 1982 and even years later, editors in New Zealand lacked the courage and vision to publish my suicide poem 'State Of 20th Century Man', it might upset readers. Failing to realize that not addressing the issue does not aid the suicidal, nor safe lives, says little for the editorial vision of editors of the era. Suicide should be in the subject agenda of English in schools and university literature programs in New Zealand education and worldwide. Poetry is an effective means of communicating the issue. More should have been done years ago and can finally be done now.

I have had much heartache and also alone but not lonely and know I am here for a reason. I Have had a tough year and upbringing but something make me wake with enthusiasm each day. I have been to many Funerals and know the heartache suicide brings. Do not expect too much of yourself. Just with your words you are helping others. Thank you Katherine and beautiful to read.
