Terrific Trio Poem by Anoop Nair

Terrific Trio

Rating: 4.5

Friend One

Waiting in the line
To pay a bottle of water
Four people waiting in front of me
Rude tall guy barge in

Backwards was his baseball cap
His funky pants was below waist
He broke the long line
Shouted at the poor cashier
Needed a pack of cigarette

I said stand in the line
He questioned the cashier
Why wait when someone has change
It’s a petty thing he argued
Desperate guy tried to open the counter

Getting into my last nerves
I hit the ceiling
I said rules are for all
Spooked cashier ring my bill by mistake

I heard him saying I broke the rule
I said you intimidated the cashier
I was fuming with fire
He vented his scorching wrath upon me
Big altercation in a super market
I stormed out of the store

I heard someone knocked on my door
I knew I hurt his ego
I thought he came for battle
I found the house owner outside
Informing me about the water issue

I realized I left food at the store
I found the guy on the way
I was hard boiled
He hit the roof
Eye ball to eye ball
Getting ready for a Mandingo fight

I thought I should talk first
I walked straight up to him
I looked straight into his eyes I said
I been around, I been worse and
I have done worse things
I said you are a cool guy and
I would ignore if the store was not busy

He apologized and i stood there in bewilderment
He asked my number
He said we should hang out one day
Guess who one of my best friends is now
If you believe it or not

Friend Two

She works at my office
She is older than my grandma
She cleans the office
She get paid very low
She gives me a chocolate every day

She used her heart for communication
She knew I had a plumbing problem
She learned I could not fix it for long
She bought a pipe for me next day
She smiled at me and I was flabbergasted

She got a woolen blanket from me next day
She looked at me with astounding budged eyes
She stood and I walked off from her as I could
Start feeling my eyes getting wet

She does not speak my language
She knows one language we both know that’s love
She is the epitome of unconditional love
She is a true friend

Friend Three

I played Darts in front of Central Mall
I got to play because of Dunkin Donuts promotion
I hit the bulls eye and won a box of donuts
I hit bulls eye again won once more

I saw a six year old polio affected kid
I saw him sitting on the street outside the mall
I saw his soul penetrating gaze
I gave him one box of donuts

I saw him with his brother next day
I gave him bhel puri
I gave him some groundnut next day
I gave him tender coconut water following day

I continued the rituals for a week
I avoided the route next day
I could not sleep that night
I went back to the same route again
I gave him a box of chocolate
I am his sole friend now

I saw the ultra modern mall girls walking in front of the kid
I wonder if they give a Hoot in Hades about the kid
I wonder if they care anything besides Prada, Gucci or Versace
I do not understand this inequality

I am no Mother Teresa but
I never get this rich poor disparity
I know this kid is same like my cousins
I know he is born under different circumstances
I will not forget him till my last breath

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is about three incredible people I met under the most unusal
circumstances during my two months stay in Bangalore, India. I tried my best to use simple diction and make my meaning very clear. It's a bit long but its not boring and that's a promise.

Beautiful friends..... inviting our attention and appreciation! The best part is how you turned yourself to be a providing friend to that polio affected six year old kid. Our small gestures of love can bring cheer and hope to many discarded lives! Greatly enjoyed this poem
