The Affair Poem by Amy Sutton

The Affair

It shouldn't sting
To hear his words
Caught out of time
In radio static.

It shouldn't catch me out
To find him
In the tilt of my head,
Or my small knowing half-smile.

It shouldn't surprise me
To feel him
Lingering
Where we lay together.

It shouldn't be so easy
To smile,
And smooth a guilty hour
Into unremarkable innocence.
