The Animal Within Poem by Cory Huennekens

The Animal Within

Who is that inside of me? The one that rages and thrashes
Perilous eyes glowing evil in the dark,
Hiding from my torch,
How can I fight the enemy outside
When I have traitors inside?
How do I defend my borders
When spies are in our midst

I’ll wrap my hands around you neck
Feel you squirm and wither
My energy halting yours
My power exerting,
I’ve lived with you far too long
Now you’re in death throws
I can feel your final attempts
Lungs gasping for any air

I will be free of your chains
It’s already been accomplished.
