The Authentic Smile Poem by Teresa Chrobak

The Authentic Smile

So, you got them all the time when you were young.
No one had to teach you how
In fact, it probably happened on the day you were born.
Remember?
They came so quickly and easily,
your heart registered an extra beat.
They were plastered across your face the entire day
Relief came in the form of sleep
Then what?
Your rested face got tired
They slipped away more quickly
No strength could hold them in place
Buried so deep beneath the daily woes
Where did they go?
So, you place them on your tired face
Often reminded to keep one on
In fact, you can go days without feeling the soreness across your face.
Forgotten?

They come more sparingly; more judiciously
your heart fills with blissful warmth.
They fill the nooks and crannies of your face
and forever in your soul
Now What?
Your heart and soul are keenly attuned
to all who love and accept your light
Shared are the magical moments
When they no longer are contained.
