The Boys I Never See Poem by Robert Rorabeck

The Boys I Never See

Visions of you in the courtyard
Dreaming of band practice, of boys and other
Girls—Haven't you both your friends
And your virginity,
While I have the sun on my body spindling
In the hallways—passing through the
Same gallant contraptions that you know
But do not think upon:
Ownerless, you go home to your mother
Behind the supermarket where you can
See the Virgin Mary in the street lights when
You go out of doors, brown skinned,
As rich as a penny—To make eyes and pretend
To kiss the boys I never see outside of school.
