The Call Of The Sea Poem by Francis Duggan

The Call Of The Sea

The waves rushing on to the sandy brown shore
And the high rolling surf against the rocks roar
And sooty oystercatchers take to the sky
And over the choppy sea pipe as they fly.

The ex sea man he still hears the call of the sea
And though living far inland he fancy he see
The gulls in the sky o'er the cliffs by the bay
And the tide in full swell rolling in far away.

His years as a fisherman he still recall
For him still his happiest memories of all
In the dark before dawn Joe the skipper and he
Were heading from shore out towards the open sea.

They cast out their nets and when the catch was hauled in
Gray haired Joe the skipper would say with a grin
If the catch was a big one 'we did well today'
The bigger their catch then the bigger his pay.

And though the saltwater to him nowhere near
The roar of the surf waves he fancy he hear
And his days as a fisherman he still recall
Remain for him as his best memories of all.
