The Circus Show Poem by Dr John Celes

The Circus Show

We saw the laser light in sky;
A circus show was held near-by;
I loved to watch a circus show;
But in the end, I would cry, Oh!

The advertisements looked so grand;
They told the people with a band;
The tent was pitched in a huge plot;
The ticket for noon show, I got.

The artistes richly dressed performed;
More girls than gents were uniformed;
The show began first with march-past;
The elephant came very last!

The horses trotted in cadence;
Seeing the clowns, laughed audience;
The ring-master looked pretty tough;
He whipped the ground with noise quite rough.

Some dogs and birds did funny tricks;
The lions, tigers got some pricks;
The trapeze act kept all spell-bound;
The jeep sped fast high o’er the ground.

The motorists drove in a globe;
The ring-master wore long a robe;
The balancing feats touched all hearts;
Each one performed so well his part!

How talented and trained was each!
Their display had lessons to teach;
What risks they took to do each act!
They smiled and did all things with tact.

The circus show was quite splendid;
The artistes vanished and soon hid;
Their life was pathetic to hear;
They performed without any fear!

Their life was just to entertain;
Good stamina they must maintain;
All things were done by them by clock;
They had to cook and wash own frock.

Most did not know wherefrom they came;
Their life went on like one long game;
They had to follow rules always;
They smiled for earning sake all days!

They were a family rather big;
Each time, they pitched tents, they would dig;
They rarely got married within;
And children born had to stay in.

When they fell ill, they got treated;
The younger girls felt most cheated;
They went to nearby shops to buy;
This was their routine till they die!

They could not leave the circus troupe;
Their life remained within this group;
Injured were some during an act;
They lived on prayers, truth and fact!

The world never pitied their lot;
They kept moving from plot to plot;
New rules prevented beasts’ display;
The circus was their life and way.

They did not get rewards for skills;
They did get awards for drills;
Their fate remained always the same;
They had no freedom to get name!

Could not governments help their cause?
Most circus shows incurred a loss;
Their talents were ignored by all;
Can no one hear their plaintive call?

Nevertheless, they must go on!
The shows are held in rain and sun;
Much sufferings, they undergo;
They pray to God before each show!

May God show them some better days!
May God free them from their life’s maze!
May God improve their life and gaze!
May God give them a happy face!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Geetha Jayakumar 22 August 2013

Circus troupe's condition is so pathetic...Even the tickets cost very less. So much pain human and animals do the circus and income is mere. If anyone dies or injure oneself nothing they will get...Very pathetic. Beautiful write and you have taken a unique topic, which I never thought of...Loved reading it very much.
